The Special Education Process

 

Mission


Willow Springs Elementary School, in partnership with families and communities, will ensure 21st Century student learning, within an atmosphere of safety, respect, and responsibility. 

 

School Goal 1


By the end of the 2011-2012 school year, 68% of students in grades 4 and 5 will meet the high growth ratio on the North Carolina EOG composite score.

 

By the end of the 2011-2012 school year, 90% of students in grades K-5 will meet or exceed promotion standards as set by WCPSS.

 

Key Process 1:  Utilize best practices in the area of reading in order to increase student achievement.


Action Steps

 

PLTs will use Foundations training and grade level data to guide and differentiate instruction.

 

Regular ed, special ed, and specialist will share assessment info and its link to instructional needs.

 

We will coordinate grade level literacy events.

 

Monitor student progress through the school year utilizing tools such as Blue Diamond, profile cards, UA, common assessments, prescriptive learning, EVAAS.

 

Utilize parent and community volunteers to assist with reading.

 

Key Process 2:  Improve science instruction by providing opportunities for inquiry, higher order thinking skills, and connecting real world experiences to text.


Action Steps

 

Teachers will administer the Blue Diamond or other common assessment after the successful completion of each science kit.

 

Investigate strategies for increasing the usage of the garden across grade levels.

Highlight key vocabulary for each science kit.

 

Investigate and purchase reading materials to connect text to science objectives.

 

Key Process 3:  Utilize best practices in the area of math in order to increase student achievement.


Action Steps

 

PLTs will use data to guide and differentiate instruction.

 

 

 

Key Process 4:  Professional Learning Communities will collaborate to focus instruction on 21st Century learning.


Action Steps

 

Teams will use data from assessments to guide instruction and determine best practices using technology, differentiation, learning teams, and higher order thinking skills.

 

Teams will update and refine rubrics/common assessments to assess essential skills 3X a quarter.

 

Coordinate vertical planning for essential skill determination.

 

Teams will utilize and review intervention pyramid plan in core subject areas.

Each team will generate SMART goals each year.

 

Each grade level will create a Core Instructional Guide with resources.

 

Introduce and train grade levels using technology (Smartboards, Flip cameras, iTouches, etc.).

 

School Goal 2


 By June 2012, WSES will show positive gains on healthy schools indicators such as parent surveys and teacher working conditions surveys.

 

Key Process 1:  Maintain a positive school climate and promote physical/ emotional wellness among students and teachers.


Action Steps

 

The WSES PTA will host a Fun Run for all students.

We will implement PBIS in all common areas of the school.

We will continue the Bengal Buddies between staff and students.

We will host a parent summit every other year.
